The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. It is one of the federal departments that are responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription and over the counter pharmaceutical drugs, cosmetics, and many other areas in which consumers interact with a product on a daily basis.
The FDA enforces laws passed by the United States of America that are directly related to food, drugs, and other public health issues.
The FDA is led by a commissioner of Food and Drugs, appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. The Commissioner reports to the Secretary of Health and Human Services. The 21st and current Commissioner is Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg. She has served as Commissioner since February 2009.
The FDA has its headquarters at Silver Spring, Maryland and has 223 field offices and 13 laboratories located throughout the 50 states, the United States Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The swine flu was in Mexico for months before any notification about this deadly strain of influenza. Once the swine flu was categorized and recognized, it became a big scare throughout the United States. In our country the swine flu was something that many people were afraid of, but didn't necessarily understand what the swine flu was, nor did they understand how to combat against it.
Although this specific strand of influenza was categorized as the swine flu, many thought it was upsetting to blame the 'swine' or pigs for the transfer of the virus. Because of this, many started calling the virus by it's more appropriate and more technical name of H1N1. H1N1 became the name that many made the corelation with swine flu.
H1N1 flu virus, even though it is often informally called swine flu, cannot be spread by eating pork or pork products. Similar to other influenza viruses, H1N1 is typically contracted by person to person transmission through breathing and human interaction. Symptoms typically last 4–6 days. To avoid spreading the infection, it is recommended that those with symptoms stay home, away from school, work, and crowded places. The CDC estimated that, in the United States alone, as of March 2010, there had been "about 12,000" deaths caused by swine flu. On January 18, 2010, Margaret Chan, WHO (World Health Organization) Director-General, said the pandemic appeared to be easing in the northern hemisphere but could still cause infections until winter ended in April, and that it was too soon to say what would happen once the southern hemisphere entered winter and the virus became more infectious. Currently, there are 14,286 confirmed deaths worldwide. This figure is a sum of confirmed deaths reported by national authorities.
Since person to person interaction is one of the more common ways to pass a virus from one human to another, the best way to help combat an infection is by keeping clean. Many illnesses are carried on children because of their poor cleaning habits and constant interaction with others. What many organizations suggest is cleaning with soap and water on a more constant basis. The problem with that seems to be that not everyone has access to soap and water all the time. So, we have developed a product that not only keeps your hands clean, but can keep them clean for hours after an application.
The product we have developed is an alcohol free hand sanitizer foam. This alcohol free hand sanitizer foam goes by the name of MEDITIZE. MEDITIZE is a safe and inexpensive product for children and adults. We have done research and even used a wide variety of alcohol based hand sanitizers, and we have been getting less than stellar results. Problems such as dry hands and powerful odor seemed to have been a few of the issues we had with the alcohol based sanitizers. And after much debate and questions, we realized that alcohol based sanitizers are actually flammable. After we learned of these issues, we believe that it would be in the best interest of the consumer to know more about these products, and hopefully look for a more economical, and safer solution.
With that, this is where we hope to step in and fulfill the needs of children, and adults alike to have an easy to use safe alternative.
